Accuracy of the Associated Press Questioned Over Reporting of Police Deaths

On 8 September 2009, the Associated Press has reported news about the targeting of a police team in northern Iraq. The correspondent did not specify who were targeted. In fact, the twelve policemen, including 2 officers that were killed or wounded were from Iraq’s Turkmen community.

The Iraqi Turkmen Human Rights Research Foundation condemns the misleading of some international news agencies which reported the serial targeting of Iraqi Turkmen in the vast Turkmen regions. In these areas, the Kurdish Peshmerga militias and politicized security agents operate, have long been the location of repeated assassinations, arbitrary detentions, abductions and torture in prisons and transfers of population.

The Iraqi Turkmen Human Rights Research Foundation urges all the correspondents of the international agencies to pay greater attention towards the information they receive from correspondents in northern Iraq, particularly from correspondents of Kurdish origin, who fail to adequately report the incidents of violence targeting the Turkmen people.

The media as the so-called ’fourth power’ has an obligations to both Iraqi and international society to ensure the accurate and objective reporting of events.  We hope that in future the AP will maintain this commitment and provide the public with true insights into the situation in Iraq

 

عدم الحيادية بعض المراسلين الدوليين في نقل الأحداث ومنهم مراسلي اسوشييتيد بريس 

بتاريخ ٨ أيلول ٢٠٠٩ نشرت وكاله الأنباء لاسوشييتيد بريس خبرا حول استهداف عدد من الشرطة في المناطق الشمالية من العراق ولم يحدد مراسل الوكالة من المستهدف. حيث استشهد وجرح أكثر من ١٢ شرطيا بينهم ٢ من الضباط وكلهم من القومية التركمانية.

والغريب إن الوكالات الأنباء العالمية تتجاهل اليوم مسلسل استهداف التركمان في المناطق التركمانية التي تتواجد فيها ميليشيات البشمركة وعناصر الأمن التابعة للأحزاب الكردية حيث الاغتيالات والسجن الاعتباطي والاختطافات والتعذيب في السجون والتغير الديمغرافي.  

إن مؤسسة بحث حقوق الإنسان لتركمان العراق إذ تدين جميع أشكال انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان أينما وقعت وضد من وقعت فإنها تدين كذلك عدم حيادية مراسل الاسوسييتيد برس ومراسلي الوكالات العالمية الأخرى في نقل الأخبار اعتمادا على مراسلهم في المناطق الشمالية وخصوصا المراسلين من الأصول الكردية الذين يتجاهلون حوادث العنف ضد القومية التركمانية ويمتنعون من ذكر إن الحوادث تستهدف التركمان بالتحديد.

كما أننا نطالب الحكومة العراقية عدم التباطؤ في تشكيل لجان مستقلة للتحقيق في هذه الجرائم المتسلسلة ومخططة وان لا يتم تسجيل الحوادث ضد مجهول.

أن ألصحافة باعتبارها سلطه رابعة وناقل للأخبار لابد من تلتزم ألدقه والموضوعية في نقل الخبر أينما وجد وإلا فإنها ستكون مسؤولة ومشاركة في ضياع الحقيقة
